Celebrating 12 years of CDC Accounting

Birthdays in business always bring a moment of reflection on the journey so far – the lessons learned, challenges faced and what drives us to continue pushing forward.

Not just on where we’ve arrived, but on where it all started.

Many people know CDC Accounting as the accountancy practice it is today, but fewer know that it was born from experience gained in another business entirely. Before CDC existed, Chris was running a business in a completely different industry and experienced first-hand what so many business owners discover the hard way: getting customers through the door is only one piece of the puzzle.

Getting customers through the door is one thing, but growth doesn’t guarantee success if strong financial systems, planning, and processes are not in place.

Over the years, there have been countless lessons learned. Some professional. Some personal.

Running a business isn’t just about profits, turnover and balance sheets. It impacts your family, your friendships, your time, your energy and sometimes even your identity.

You quickly learn that not everyone who supports your business is a friend. Sometimes clients you go above and beyond for move on without a second thought. Sometimes loyalty isn’t returned in the way you’d hoped. Sometimes you give far more than you should because you genuinely want to help.

In the early years, Chris often did exactly that. Charging fees that were too low, sometimes no fee at all, because he believed that if he cared enough and gave enough, everyone would value that in return.

Experience teaches you otherwise.

One of the biggest lessons has been that a healthy business must first be sustainable. You cannot continue helping others if you aren’t protecting your own business at the same time.

Because the reality of being a business owner is very different from what people see on the surface.

  • There is no sick pay.
  • No holiday pay.
  • No guaranteed income.
  • No switching off at 5pm.

There are sleepless nights, difficult decisions, unexpected challenges and responsibilities that rarely make it onto social media.

The iceberg analogy often comes to mind. People see the success above the waterline, but underneath are the sacrifices, risks, worries, setbacks, lessons and perseverance that made it possible.

And yet, despite all of that, we wouldn’t change it.

Because we understand exactly what it feels like to take that leap of faith and build something of your own.

We believe that owning a business should create opportunities, freedom and a lifestyle that reflects the risks you’ve taken. Otherwise, why take those risks at all?

What started as a one-man operation has grown into a team of five amazing people who share the same passion for helping businesses succeed.

A special mention must go to our Office Manager, Lisa, who has been instrumental in helping shape and run CDC for almost eight years, and to our incredible accounts team who work tirelessly to provide a professional, reliable and genuinely personal service to every client we support.

We have never wanted to be the stereotypical accountancy firm.

Of course compliance matters. Keeping clients compliant with HMRC matters. Ensuring tax efficiency matters.

But we have always believed there is so much more to the finance function than submitting accounts and tax returns.

Our role is to help business owners understand their numbers, make informed decisions, improve profitability, embrace technology, save time, reduce stress and build stronger businesses.

Every year brings new challenges, new technology, new opportunities and new ways to support our clients better than we did the year before. We’re still learning. Still evolving. Still listening. Still improving.

The greatest reward isn’t our own growth. It’s watching the businesses we work with thrive.

  • It’s seeing a client employ their first member of staff.
  • Move into bigger premises.
  • Increase profitability.
  • Take more time with their family.
  • Achieve goals they once thought were out of reach.

When we sit down to review a client’s figures and can see that progress, that’s when we’re reminded why CDC exists.

Because whilst we’re accountants by profession, what we’re really passionate about is helping people create better businesses and, ultimately, better lives.

To every client, past and present, every member of our team, every supporter and every business owner who has trusted us along the way, thank you.

Here’s to another year of growth, learning, challenges, success and making a difference.

Happy Birthday, CDC Accounting.
